GYEM Statement on Ketu South and Afaja South Tidal Wave Disaster

Share This:

The Ghana Youth Environmental Movement (GYEM) expresses its deepest solidarity with the communities of Ketu South and Afaja South in the Volta Region, following the catastrophic tidal waves and rainstorms that struck on March 1, 2025. This devastating disaster has displaced over 797 individuals, destroyed homes, and shattered livelihoods, leaving countless families in dire need of assistance.

While the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has initiated relief efforts, the scale of the crisis demands urgent and comprehensive support. Immediate interventions are required to provide:

  • Safe and secure housing for displaced families,
  • Food and clean water to prevent hunger and disease,
  • Medical aid to address injuries and health emergencies,
  • Infrastructure repair to restore access to essential services, and
  • Alternative livelihood programs to help communities rebuild their lives.

GYEM calls on the Government of Ghana, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and partners to mobilize resources and take swift action to address this humanitarian crisis. We also urge long-term investments in climate-resilient infrastructure and early warning systems to protect vulnerable coastal communities from future disasters.

As an organization dedicated to environmental sustainability and youth empowerment, GYEM remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for sustainable solutions and supporting affected communities during this challenging time. Together, we can rebuild stronger, more resilient communities and ensure a safer future for all.
